Matthew Kolen, 14, who was diagnosed at age eight with Asperger syndrome, speaks on his mobile phone after arriving home from school in Long Island, New York April 1, 2014. Asperger syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that is considered to be on the high functioning end of the spectrum. As many as one in 68 U.S. children have autism, a 30 percent increase in just two years, U.S. health officials said on March 27, but experts think the rise may simply reflect that parents and doctors are getting better at recognizing and diagnosing the disorder. World Autism Awareness Day is recognized on April 2, 2014, according to autismspeaks.org.
