US Marine Col. John Miniclier at the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway
US Marine Col. John Miniclier wears his original helmet that he wore during the Battle of Midway on Midway Atoll, June 4, 2012. Miniclier, who was a 20-year-old PFC during the battle, spotted 33 Japanese bombers, many which flew over his position, and bombed the military installation during the battle. The Battle of Midway, fought in early June 1942 between Japanese and American forces, is widely considered the decisive naval battle of the war in the Pacific.
