Paiz was accompanied from his hometown of Aguacate, Guatemala, by his relative Joselino Gomez Esteban. Gomez Esteban called 911 after Paiz collapsed but Border Patrol agents were unable to locate Paiz before he died. Paiz died of hyperthermia or heatstroke just 3.3 miles from the border.
