Sugar cane is stacked-up at a warehouse in Hanoi March 3. Official figures show that sugar consumption has risen sharply in Vietnam since market-orientated reforms were introduced in the late 1980's, but most of the country's refined sugar is still imported. In a country of 77 million people, the estimated sugar consumption has risen to over seven kg from just 4.3 kg in 1994.
