VIETNAMESE WOMAN CHOPS DOG MEAT AT A MARKET IN HANOI.
A Vietnamese woman chops dog meat in a Hanoi market February 8, 2002.
Dog meat is a popular dish in Vietnam, especially in the cool winter
months leading up to the Lunar New Year or Tet as it is called in
Vietnam. The next lunar year begins on February 12, 2002. Like in
Korea, where controversy has raged over the eating of dog meat ahead of
the World Cup soccer final, dog meat is reputed to provide stamina. For
Vietnamese people, it is also thought to chase away evil spirits.
