FIREFIGHTERS WATCH THOUSANDS OF ACRES OF EVERGLADES BURN.
Broward County firefighters patrolling Interstate 75, also known as "Alligator Alley" in the Florida Everglades, maintain a watchful eye April 19 as the main body of brush fire burns thousands of acres of sawgrass. State officials say more than 100,000 acres have burned in the last three days of the blaze. The fires, which have taken a westerly turn, have shut down I-75 which is Florida's primary highway connecting south Florida's east and west coast and threatens an Indian reservation.
