George Wein, founder of the Newport Jazz Festival, plays the piano in his New York City apartment. The 71-year-old jazz pianist and promoter founded the festival - the granddaddy of all modern outdoor pop festivals and the scene of Bob Dylan's 1965 conversion to electrified music - in 1959. Four decades later, Wein's annual galas in Newport manage to retain a distinctve identity despite increasing competition from a horde of new festivals and traveling shows like Lollapalooza and Lilith Fair.
