MAKAH INDIANS APPROACH CARCASS OF GREY WHALE.
Members of the Makah Tribe approach the carcass of a grey whale they caught near Ozette, Washington on May 17. Using an eight-man wooden paddling canoe, the Makah tribesman harpooned the North-migrating whale several times and then fired a .50-caliber rifle at it to kill it, making this the first successful Makah Tribe grey whale hunt in 70 years. The Makahs then towed the whale for several hours to the tribe's home at Makah Marina in the Strait of Juan De Fuca.
