YEAREND PICTURES 2002.
A four-year-old male elephant named "Phong" plays a xylophone with his
trunk as part of an elephant orchestra at Thailand's elephant
conservation centre in Lampang, 600 km (372 miles) north of Bangkok, on
September 8, 2002. Phong, who was rescued from the streets of Bangkok,
is now part of an 11-piece orchestra played entirely by elephants. The
surreal music they create being put together on a new second compact
disc, the brainchild of Californian-born resident conservationist
Richard Lair and compatriot musician Dave Soldier. Picture taken
